Building the English Academic Literacy Capacity of Indonesian Post-graduate Students

    Activity: Other activitiesOther

    Description

The Indonesian Taman Siswa philosophy encourages
participation of students from low-income backgrounds
at university. However, these students tend to be
unprepared for the reading/writing demands of academia.
This two-year project will enhance Indonesian University
students’ participation in the global academic community
in English by integrating English academic literacy
development into a Post Graduate TEFL course. A
successful approach implemented at CDU will be adapted
for a core unit of study at Universitas Sarjanawiyata
Tamansiswa (UST), to build students' English literacy skills
towards the production of a publishable article as their
final assessment. Through their participation, the students will experience this language building approach first-hand
and utilise it for their own undergraduate TEFL teaching
as a continuing legacy from the project. This project will
    include:
    • collaboration between CDU and UST faculty to design,
    develop and deliver a multimodal
model of integrated Academic English literacy
    • evaluation of the effectiveness of this approach.
