Research interests

Professor Turner has qualifications in nursing, population health and education; has worked as a clinical nurse, epidemiologist and held senior appointments in the tertiary and government sectors since 1992, including a Ministerial appointment as Assistant Commissioner (Nursing) in Queensland.

Professor Turner was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University and a recipient of a National Health & Medical Research Fellowship. Professor Turner established the former School of Nursing and Midwifery at The University of Queensland in 2005. She is the recipient of Excellence in Teaching Awards, a distinguished Alumni Award and has published more than 145 peer reviewed publications and attracted over $7 million in grant funding as the lead investigator. Professor Turner led the ARC & NHMRC funded Nurses & Midwives e-cohort study, a longitudinal study of >10,000 that contributed to Health Workforce Australia reports and is now archived at the Australian Data Archive in the longitudinal studies collection.

Professor Turner was a non-executive Board Director of Mater Ltd, a company that operates 2 public and 5 private hospitals [2008-2019] and Mater Education Ltd, a company that delivers health professional education [2016-2019] and Mater Research, a medical research institute [2018-2019].
