Research interests

David is an Honorary University Fellow with RIEL. David’s research focuses on the use of earth observation sensors, in particular those from the satellite missions the Sentinels, for the monitoring of water quality in coastal and open ocean waters around Australia. Research applications include oil pollution detection in marine waters, coastal ecosystems health monitoring, phytoplankton blooms phenology and field-based bio-optics.

As a post-doctoral fellow with RIEL from 2012 to 2015, David worked on the water quality of Darwin Harbour and the Arafura Sea. David has maintained a strong interest for research in tropical environments ever since and has supervised past CDU students. Past RIEL student supervision includes the monitoring of water turbidity in Darwin Harbour.
