Research interests
Edith Kirlew is a PhD Candidate in Linguistics and Education at Charles Darwin University, Australia. Her research is dedicated to exploring
the use of Indigenous Australian languages in education, with a particular focus on employing Kriol to teach mathematics to children in
Numbulwar, a small Indigenous community on the West coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Edith holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in
Linguistics and Mathematics from the University of Queensland. Since 2019, she has held various roles in Numbulwar, including Teacher
Linguist at the school and Community Linguist for the culture and media program. In her work, she has managed the Wubuy revitalisation
program at Numbulwar School, and trained local adults in teaching, translation, and resource creation. She has provided expert linguistic
support for community-driven projects, such as recording the history of Makassan contact with the Nunggubuyu people and Ngulmiya's
recent album of modern ceremonial music. In all her work, Edith is committed to empowering Indigenous Australians by supporting them
in designing and implementing community-led projects that reflect their cultural and linguistic aspirations.
