Biography

Guzyal serves as a Deputy Chair of the Academic Board and Deputy Chair of the Academic Programs Committee. In the past, Guzyal was a founding coordinator of the Indigenous Pre-Accounting Enabling Program and coordinator of the Indigenous Pre-Law Enabling Program (2021).

Guzyal researches and publishes in the areas of national uniform legislation, harmonisation in the federation, federalism and ‘law as data methods’ in the context of legislation. Guzyal brings a unique perspective as a researcher and legislative drafter of national uniform legislation.

Guzyal previously practised as a solicitor at commercial practice and worked as a legislative drafter with the Officer of Parliamentary Counsel NT. Guzyal was a recipient of the Australian Post Graduate Award for completing her PhD candidature with Charles Darwin University. Educated at the American University in Central Asia, the University of New England and the Australian National University, Guzyal speaks five languages.

Guzyal teaches Commercial and Corporate law units.

Research interests:

Guzyal has three interconnected areas of research expertise:

The main area is the complexities of harmonisation, national uniform legislation and law reform. This area of research stems from practical problems she has encountered while working as a legislative drafter. Her book titled 'National uniform legislation' is the first research monograph that considers 85 sets of uniform Acts as a body of law. This became possible due to 'law as data' methods.

Her second area of research expertise is First Nation allyship in terms of Indigenous corporations and supporting First Nations students.

The third area of research expertise, she is developing, examines issues relating to academia. In particular, an article exposing contract cheating as a common problem for the international academic community has been widely acknowledged in the media and cited.

Dr Guzyal is available to supervise research students who are interested in topics relating to these areas or more generally to Administrative Law, Corporations, Law and Technology.
