Research interests

Dr. Isabella Garti is a midwifery research fellow at the Molly Wardaguga Institute for First Nations Birth Rights, Charles Darwin University. She has a clinical background in nursing and midwifery with over 15 years of midwifery practice, education, and research and research translation experience. Isabella has a keen interest in addressing health service disparities and improving the quality of midwifery care for women who develop pregnancy complications in poorly resourced settings. Isabella is passionate about researching pre-eclampsia management in LMICs, evidence-based midwifery, midwifery-led care, culturally safe maternity care, undergraduate midwifery education, and innovative continuing professional development approaches. 

Isabella currently co-leads the development of a Birthing on Country Toolkit to help maternity services both Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and health services build and expand culturally safe care in Australia. She’s also leading a Gates Foundation–funded sub award to digitise preservice midwifery education in Nigeria, creating innovative tools for the next generation of midwives.
