Professor Francis is an experienced nurse academic and researcher and has held a number of senior leadership positions. She has qualifications in nursing, primary health care, and education. Her research program targets rural health, chronic and complex illness, practice enhancement, and health workforce. Professor Francis is acknowledged within her profession for her expertise in rural nursing and midwifery. She has significant publications and research reflecting this expertise. She is a fellow of Australian College of Nursing and Joanna Briggs Institute for Evidence Based Practice. In addition, she holds adjunct professorial appointments with Adelaide, Monash, Charles Sturt, James Cook, and the University of Tasmania. She is an external examiner for the University of Malaysia and has a long affiliation with Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, Thailand.


  • Over 30 years experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in nursing, and to a lesser extent in allied health and medical programs at a number of Australian and international universities. The latter teaching was in the capacity of an adjunct and visiting academic.
