Personal profile
Research interests
My main area of research interest is the way in which technology mediates continuing literacy development for young adults, particularly as reading rates of traditional long-form fiction novels generally wane after primary school, and the pedagogical implications of the shifting literacy paradigm for older students.
Young adults are reading and writing in increasingly multimodal contexts and, as such, I use a practice-based research approach to push the boundaries between reading and gaming by playing with form to create new ways for teens to engage in the reading process. I use iterative design to challenge traditional understandings and definitions of 'the book-as-object' by writing and developing narrative-based gaming (or choice-based reading) experiences to enhance reading engagement in long-form narrative in both fiction and non-fiction genres.
I am trained K-12 teacher, am registered and have taught in primary, secondary, and tertiary contexts in both NSW and NT.
Other areas of interest:
- integrated technology pedagogy
- narrative-based learning
- gamification
- transdisciplinary curriculum design
- teacher professional development (technology, multimodal literacy, creativity)
