Mark is a Darwin-based emergency physician and environmental sustainability advocate. He is the Northern Territory delegate in the SustainHealth Special Interest Group of Doctors for the Environment Australia.
In 2019 he began advocating for NT Health to develop policy in climate adaptation and waste and emissions mitigation. He chairs the Sustainable Healthcare Committee for the Top End region of NT Health, whose membership includes senior clinical, allied health and operations leaders. The committee successfully campaigned to recruit the NT’s first Director of Sustainability Action in 2023, who is now assisted by a small sustainability team. Subsequently, a Territory-wide sustainability network has emerged, and a sustainable healthcare strategy is under review.
Mark’s focus has now shifted to addressing the impacts of climate change and escalating operational challenges on the stability and wellbeing of the health workforce, which threatens service delivery. In 2021 he initiated the RDH Campus Greening Project whose outdoor green spaces seek to enhance wellbeing by adapting to climate change, curating restorative encounters with biodiversity and showcasing Indigenous ways of knowing. He was awarded the Northern Territory’s 2023/2024 Australian Government Climate Innovation Award in recognition of this work. The pillars of the greening project were included in the design brief for the 2024 Royal Darwin Hospital Landscape Masterplan. He recently embarked on a PhD through the University of Melbourne to explore the pathways connecting biodiversity and health in healthcare settings.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
