Paula Binks (PhD, BSc, RN) is a Senior Research Fellow and Deputy Lead of the viral hepatitis research program at Menzies School of Health Research. She has worked in research since 1998, during this time gaining experience as a Laboratory Scientist, Registered Nurse and Project Manager. Paula has implemented epidemiological, data-linkage, cohort, and clinical trials studies among Australia's First Nations Peoples. Paula understands the intricacies of working in remote Australia and has extensive experience building trusting and respectful research partnerships with First Nations’ communities. Paula has also worked as a palliative care nurse. For 14 years, Paula cared for patients at the end of their cancer journey, which has inspired her work in early detection and treatment of cancer. Paula’s research is dedicated to improving hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) outcomes for First Nations Australians, with a focus on early detection of HCC. She has demonstrated that ‘care on country’ improves health outcomes for First Nations Australians with hepatitis B and HCC. Paula has also created a successful model for working with translators to develop health resources for different cultural and linguistic groups across the NT, as evidenced by the translation of the “Hep B Story” educational app into eleven Aboriginal languages.
