Research interests

Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Shan He is a Bio-Engineer, a leader with research and teaching expertise in industry and university. He completed his PhD from Flinders University, Australia. After that, he has worked in 4 countries (Australia, New Zealand, Italy and China) with outstanding achievement. Dr. Shan He has achieved 72 peer-reviewed journal publications, with 52 as the first or corresponding authors; 1 peer-reviewed book publications; and 15 patents application with 5 granted. Dr. Shan is also serving as editors in 2 journals: Frontier in Marine Science (IF=5.247) and Frontier in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (IF=5.89).

Dr. Shan He’s research interest is value-adding utilization of bioresource, mainly focus on:

1). Utilization of bioresource for healthy food development. Dr. Shan He has developed processing method to

--produce protein hydrolysates with the function of reducing oil content in deep-fried food from fish processing co-products;

--to produce lobster oil and protein peptides with strong lobster preserved lobster flavor from lobster shell

--to extract food-standard emulsifier from seaweed.

2). Sustainable materials produced from bioresource. Dr. Shan He has value-added bioresources into various materials. For example:

--graphene oxide from kombucha cellulose and apple pomace

--biodegradable film with enhanced strength from alginate derived from seaweed

--protein-polysaccharide material for drug delivery from gelatin derived from cow skin.

Dr. Shan He will keep exploring mainly in these two fields above. He is open for any discussion and collaboration to pursuit this mission: turn bioresource from cost-center to profit-center.

Apart from professional pursuit, Dr. Shan He cannot survive without spicy food and tennis.
