Research interests

Dr Stephen Kerry is a Lecturer in Sociology in CIFAS. Dr Kerry holds degrees in gender studies, higher education teaching, and counselling. They* are curently studying Mandarin.

Their research specialisation focuses on sex, gender, and sexuality. Dr Kerry was awarded a PhD in 2005 which explored the lived experiences of Australians born with intersex variations. More recently they completed a research project into the health needs of trans and sex/gender diverse people living in the Northern Territory, with specific focus on Indigenous trans and sex/gender diverse people, also known as sistergirls and brotherboys. This project culminated in a book, titled 'Trans Dilemmas', published by Routledge in 2018.

Dr Kerry is currently conducting research into the lives of LGBTQIA+ Buddhists in Australia. They are a Zen Buddhist and underwent their Jukai ceremony in 2019. Dr Kerry also volunteers as a telephone counsellor.
