Digital Innovation for the Transformation of Midwifery Pedagogy

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

In African low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Nigeria, there are significant challenges in delivering high-quality maternal and neonatal care. These challenges stem from deficiencies in pre-service midwifery education and ongoing, continuing, in-service education, which hinders progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3.1 and 3.2, focused on reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. Many midwifery programs fall below global standards, with outdated curricula, insufficient infrastructure, and a lack of competency-based education, thereby necessitating urgent strategic improvements.
The project titled "Digital Innovation for the Transformation of Midwifery Pedagogy" seeks to address these gaps by piloting a comprehensive digital platform aimed at revolutionising midwifery education in Nigeria. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the initiative will incorporate innovative teaching tools such as strengthening/developing a learning management system, development, and deployment of digital content on MNH innovations. These tools are designed to modernise midwifery education, enabling students to gain critical clinical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care in Maternal and Newborn Health particularly in low-resource environments.
