Living Transgender in the Northern Territory

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The proposed project will document mental illness and suicide (MIS) within
trans and sex/gender diverse (TSGD) people in the NT. The Principal
Researcher (PI) is a researcher at Charles Darwin University and has been researching the lived experiences of TSGD people in the NT since 2013. Two significant findings of the research are the lack of access to appropriate health care and social isolation. Moreover, TSGD Territorians spoke of suicide in two ways: their own suicidal thoughts or behaviour and others who have died of suicide. If successful, the funding would contribute to a Pilot Focus Group (PFG). The PFG will consist of three informal discussion sessions located in Darwin, Alice Springs, and Tiwi Islands (the viability of the latter will be reassessed in 2021). Three members of the NT’s TSGD community will be recruited as paid facilitators to lead these focus groups as peer-led discussion sessions (PLDS).
