Description

The overall objective of the project is to improve the current knowledge of the occurrence of Sawfish (Pristis spp.) and River sharks (Glyphis spp.) in fishing grounds of northern Australia adjacent to marine parks through recording fishers’ knowledge and verification.
The majority of data on Sawfish and River sharks has been collected in rivers or coastal environments in Northern Australia; however, there is little known about their occurrence and movements offshore. There is also limited information on the reproductive period for the Green sawfish and Dwarf sawfish which is crucial knowledge for managing these declining species. Historic and contemporary observations by commercial fishers operating in the Northern Territory (NT) have the potential to fill information gaps about distributions, offshore movements, pupping season and changes in catch rates of these species over time.
