The Impact of Heat on the Tourism Sector in Victoria

Project: HDR ProjectMasters by Research

Project Details

Description

Climate change poses a significant global threat, with Australia experiencing a 1.4°C
temperature increase and predicted extreme temperatures in Victoria to rise by 2.4°C in the
coming decades if greenhouse gas emissions continue as they are now.
Extreme heat in Australia poses significant risks to ecosystems, economy, health, and
tourism, and has resulted in the highest number of deaths compared to other climatic and
environmental accidents. The research investigates the impact of rising temperatures on
Victorian tourism aims to understand its response and proposes a heatwave adaptation
roadmap for the Australian tourism sector.
The research employs a mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design,
utilizing a quantitative survey to gather primary data from 500 Victoria tourist operators. The
study will also conduct twenty-five to 30 semi-structured in-depth interviews to triangulate
the results of the online survey. The data will be cleaned and then analysed using Excel and
SPSS.
This study fills a research gap on the impact of rising temperatures on tourism, highlighting a
severe lack of knowledge and challenges for the industry and authorities. In addition, it offers
practical insights and a roadmap for mitigating or adapting to rising temperatures' effects on
tourist destinations, tourists, and tourism operators in Victoria.
