Project Details
Description
DENR require CDU’s expertise to assist in developing surveillance systems that detect potential contaminants in the Middle Arm part of inner Darwin Harbour and to measure incremental changes in these potential contaminants. Approximately 125 seabed samples will be collected at the set of pre-determined locations in Middle Arm using established sampling protocols. These samples will be delivered to CDU who will process the samples for a suite of chemical analyses and either undertake these analyses themselves or outsource them to another laboratory provider.
The analyses will include:
• benthic chlorophyll a and phaeophytin a,
• total organic carbon (and inorganic carbon),
• total nitrogen
• organic isotopes of nitrogen
• metals (Al, Sb, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Hg, Ni, Ag, V and Zn),
• total sulphur and inorganic sulphur,
• petroleum hydrocarbons (BTEX, PAHs and total petroleum hydrocarbons) and pesticides (utra-trace)
• Grain size analysis
The fieldwork will take place in the period from July 2020 to November 2020 and the samples will be provided to the laboratory intermittently throughout this period in approximately five (5) batches.
