    Abstract

Algernon Hawkins Thomond Keith-Falconer was born in Edinburgh on 12 August 1852 and became the ninth Earl of Kintore in 1880. He served the Empire by becoming governor of South Australia in 1889. In 1891, Kintore became the first governor to visit the capital of South Australia's Northern Territory. From Palmerston he travelled overland to Adelaide, crossing the continent from north to south. It is the story of that journey, the circumstances surrounding it and the controversies it raised, that are the concern of this paper.
