Abstract
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, especially Generative AI (GenAI) from Large Language Models (LLMs), presents unprecedented challenges for Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). This conceptual piece outlines Charles Darwin University's (CDUs) strategy for responsible GenAI use; an institution with a large external cohort of students. The approach includes an actionable GenAI policy distinguishing acceptable from unacceptable uses and an Honour Code whereby students must acknowledge their use of GenAI in their studies. Informed by UNESCO's (2023) principles, a conceptual framework presented helped inform and embrace GenAI use transparently and ethically while offering room for innovation. The framework emphasises adapting innovative pedagogy, fostering awareness of responsible GenAI engagement, and upholding professional and academic integrity. Scenario-based case studies serve as examples for other stakeholders navigating GenAI's role within their institution and preferring a ‘soft’ approach to GenAI use with their students.
