In recent years, there is a high growth rate and low survival rate in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Providing palliative care for ESRD patients has become a public health problem in the world. Advance care planning (ACP) has attracted more attention under the background that patient's autonomy has been attached more importance. This article reviews the epidemiological characteristics of ESRD, ACP in ESRD patients in the overseas, Hong Kong and Taiwan, obstacles of carry out ACP under the background of Chinese culture. Ultimately, providing the theoretical basis and practical guidance for carrying out advance care planning in Chinese mainland.
