Abstract

Since 2020, rural and regional journalism, particularly across the top third of Australia, has faced two COVID-related threats, both of which have isolated journalists. The withdrawal of News Corp in May 2020 (Barnes et al., 2022; Murray, 2022) —accelerated by the pandemic—left massive news deserts and the media outlets that did survive the pandemic, adapted by decentralising, closing offices, and reducing staff numbers. So regions that once had bustling newsrooms now have journalists navigating the new media landscape from their home-offices, cars, and living-rooms. Moreover, many of the news start-ups, which have emerged since 2020, have business models geared towards single-reporter or micro-newsrooms. As a result, the experience of being a remote or rural reporter is not only more challenging, but also more isolated.
