Abstract

This research aims to explore barriers in implementing mobile assisted language learning (MALL) in rural areas of Indonesia using a qualitative case study approach. This case study was conducted in Pesisir Barat, a remote area in Lampung province, Indonesia which is hundreds of kilometers from the city center. Qualitative data collection was carried out through surveys of students and in-depth interviews with representatives of English teachers from 10 high schools. The research results reveal that in general, connectivity, the affordability of mobile devices and the ability of students in operating mobile devices are no longer stated as the issues for students, but teachers. Moreover, various other obstacles such as limited ownership of MALL devices, lack of digital literacy and negative perceptions about the use of technology in learning from senior teachers need to be addressed. This research contributes to understanding in depth the real challenges of implementing MALL in remote rural areas and provides recommendations to the government in implementing intensive digital literacy programs for teachers and students. Research findings also emphasize the importance of involving local socio-cultural perspectives in designing MALL implementation in remote rural areas to create an effective and contextual learning process.
