Abstract

Cough is the most common symptom of respiratory
disease and is one of the most common reasons parents
seek medical attention in young children. Cough can
indicate the entire spectrum of childhood illness,
ranging from being a symptom of the 'common cold' to
a symptom of severe, life limiting disorders such as
cystic fibrosis. Most cough in children is acute and
resolves promptly. Prolonged or chronic cough is
defined as cough lasting longer than 4-6 weeks. It is
always abnormal and deserves careful consideration of
the cause.
