Dark Tourism: Transformation of sites of death, suffering and the macabre

Research output: Book/ReportOther report

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the uses to which former prisons have been put and whether any or all of these uses might be appropriate for Darwin’s Fannie Bay Gaol. Australian and New Zealand Heritage Registers were searched using the words, where possible, ‘gaol’ and ‘prison’. This inevitably resulted in properties that were police stations and/or court houses with adjoining detention cells. Few of those properties have been examined here because they are not relevant to Fannie Bay Gaol, which was constructed as a stand-alone prison.
International sites were selected because of existing literature and/or personal
recommendations from individuals who have visited them.
