Drastic reduction in band gap due to pairing of carriers and exciton-lattice interaction in non-metallic solids

    Abstract

    It is shown that the band gap of some non-metallic solids can be drastically reduced due to formation of a bound exciton-exciton state in a highly deformed lattice. Such states may lie within the valence band reducing the energy gap to zero.
