Literacy Frontiers in the Digital Environment with Data and Dialogue

Abstract

This paper conceptualises data literacy as an emerging foundational skill for formal learning and education. In doing so, we foreground the growing issue of discerning facts from data in the digital environment within the context of an accelerated shift toward an Artificial Intelligence paradigm. In this paradigm, dialogue is emerging as a prominent affordance that disrupts the reliance on search technologies and breaks scroll culture. We contend that developing essential data literacy skills within the K-12 context lays the foundations for a data-literate society. Given the pace of advancements in the capabilities of the digital environment, however, it is not yet entirely clear what the full scope of data literacy skills might be. In framing both challenges, this paper investigates contemporary perspectives on data and critical thinking and evaluates how well they meet the needs of citizens in the contemporary era in terms of data literacy.
