Abstract
Will Stubbs: This is not an essay. Or, if it is an essay, it is an essay about what happened to me on the way to writing an essay. It is the only way I could find to resolve the conundrum I faced.
My brief from the Macleay Museum was to write a contemporary view of the bark paintings collected 1946–47 by University of Sydney anthropologist Ronald Berndt at Yirrkala, the place where I have lived for 25 years. That whole time I have been employed by the Yirrkala Art Centre, buying and selling bark paintings created by the descendants.
