Abstract
If you want to understand the environmental future of northern Australia, look to the south of the continent. Equally, if you want to understand what the landscapes of southern Australia were like last century turn your attention to the here and now of the northern frontier. Northern Australia and southern Australia are not only geographically linked but they form part of the `frontier', albeit separated by a century or two of change.
