This chapter discusses the brief introduction to aquaculture (what aquaculture is and why is it important, what intensive aquaculture means, and special features of finfish aquaculture in the context of intensification); how intensive aquaculture is achieved (measures and actions for aquaculture intensification, and a brief comment on markets and supply chain); aquaculture intensification, sustainability and fish welfare (sustainable aquaculture, and aquaculture intensification and welfare); analysis of the implications of aquaculture intensification for fish welfare (increased control over the physical environment, increased stocking density, faster growth, health management, and control of reproduction); and future trends in aquaculture (aquaculture intensification and fish welfare and what the future of aquaculture may involve).
