Abstract
In this paper we discuss the concept of numeracy and its relation to mathematical literacy. We argue that in the school context numeracy across the curriculum provides a key context for developing mathematical literacy. We present a framework for numeracy and an approach to teacher professional learning that we think necessary to confront the many challenges of dealing with the mathematical demands of the school curriculum.
