Abstract

Turbidimeters are used by the scientific community and the rivers managers for the survey of sediment transport in mountainous watersheds. Many mountainous watersheds in the French Alps and in the volcanic highlands of Mexico were equipped with turbidimeters for the continuous survey of the Suspended Sediments Concentrations (SSC). In such watersheds, SSC concentrations reach extreme values (ten to hundred grams per litre). Two sensors of high range concentrations were tested and are used routinely. This paper deals with the feedback on the in situ instrumentation and on the building of SSC/turbidity calibration curve. It also shows the utility of this type of measurement for the calculation of sediments fluxes and particulate pollution fluxes in rivers.
