Tests for spontaneous ignition of solid materials

    We have organized the content of this chapter as follows: Based on the classification of the test methods, sections 16.2–16.6 explain the calorimetric test methods adopted in practice for the examination of phenomena of spontaneous combustion affecting solid materials. Furthermore, section 16.2 provides the details of the experimental set-ups, introduces the indices developed for quantification of the self-heating and self-ignition behavior. This is followed, in sections 16.7–16.9, by a review of non-calorimetric-based methods introduced in literature. Section 16.10 discusses the advantages and drawbacks of the associated test methods and addresses the reliability of the associated indices obtained from the experimental measurements. Section 16.11 draws conclusions, and recapitulates suggestions for the development of more advanced indices.
