Abstract

In 2004, Ḻawurrpa and Garŋgulkuy, two Yolŋu researchers from the Yalu’Marŋgithinyaraw Centre at Galiwin’ku conducted research into the needs and conditions of homeless Yolŋu in Darwin. At the time, there had been considerable discussion in the media about itinerants. The two researchers were concerned about their relatives who were ‘long-grassers’; that is, people who by choice or circumstance were sleeping in the fresh air, under the stars. In that research, it became clear that most Yolŋu who were homeless on Larrakia land were continuing to live a viable Yolŋu life, and had their own reasons for not being on their own land, or in the larger Yolŋu settlements.
