Adherence to Prophylaxis Guidelines in Patients that develop symptomatic venous thromboembolism

: a retrospective hospital audit, literature review, data collection and analysis

Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of hospital related morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this audit was to identify the adherence to hospital VTE prophylaxis guidelines in patients that have developed VTE within 90 days of admission at Royal Darwin Hospital in 2007 to 2009. A total of 542 episodes of VTE were identified by the Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) coding department, pertaining to 431 diagnoses. Diagnosis was based on a confirmed compression Doppler ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) angiogram.
