ASEAN's role in the world economy is at a watershed. The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) aims to unify the ASEAN market across a wide range of manufactured products. Its principal objectives is to boost ASEAN's attractiveness to foreign investors, particularly as a base for production for the global market. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide some quantitative assessment for the importance of this economic agreement for one of its signatories, Malaysia. The principal empirical tool used is that of revealed comparative advantage (RCA), developed by Bela Balassa (1965).
