This thesis presents a method for the design of brushless DC motor controllers for usein electric vehicles. In order to determine the motor controller specifications, a studywas conducted on the performance of an internal combustion engine vehicle and goalswere set. An analytic design for a hard switched, hysteresis band current control,20kW. DC brushless motor controller is presented. Construction and designtechniques for building the motor controller are outlined and a prototype motorcontroller built. The motor controller was tested throughout its rated voltage andcurrent range and results presented. Based upon these results, conclusions weredrawn showing the method presented is suitable for the design of motor controllersbr use in electric vehicles.
