Abstract
This thesis is an ethnographic study which looks at the process of creating and running a program designed to facilitate the journey of middle school boys towards becoming autonomous learners.Using the 6 p model of Person, Place, Purpose, Persistence, Principles and Peace, the thesis explores how educators can use a range of outdoor activities and personal development strategies to build a program which encourages students to look inside themselves as a source of strength and direction, rather than relying on the institution to provide these motives for them.
In conclusion, the thesis shows that students can indeed become autonomous learners for the period of time they attend the Learning Journeys program, but that further work needs to be implemented if this change is to be maintained once students return to their original 5c11001 environment.
